Lincoln and Lee University

The faculty has its origins at the Lincoln and Lee University movement first put forth from the Methodist Church and its own Bishop Ernest Lynn Waldorf from the 1920s. The projected university (that was to honor Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee) has to be built on the Missouri--Kansas boundary in 75th and State Line Road, in which the Battle of Westport (the biggest battle west of this Mississippi River throughout the American Civil War) happened. The centerpiece of this school was to be a National Memorial indicating the grave of an unknown Union soldier and unidentified Confederate soldier. Proponents of this faculty said it'd be a place "where North fulfilled South and East met West." The Methodist interest represented the church's significant function in the maturation of the Kansas City region through the Shawnee Methodist Mission that was the second capital of Kansas.

Since the Methodists began having issues piecing together the essential land, other civic leaders such as J.C. Nichols started pushing to make a cultural centre on each side of Brush Creek, just east of their Country Club Plaza. According to the strategy the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kansas City Art Institute will be constructed north of Brush Creek round the property of The Kansas City Star publisher William Rockhill Nelson plus a personal nonsectarian University of Kansas City (originally suggested as a junior faculty) could be built south of the creek. Moreover, a hospital could be built round the estate of Kansas City Journal-Post writer Walter S. Dickey. The hospital was not constructed.

In 1930, following the Methodists had attracted the Kansas City Dental School in their fold, the two programs were merged. And plans were underway to grow it into a four-year faculty.

The university was constructed on a 40-acre (16.19 ha) storyline, southeast of the Nelson mansion. William Volker had bought and donated this property for the University of Kansas City. The initial Volker purchase didn't include the Dickey mansion itself. Dickey died abruptly in 1931 and Volker obtained it to be the very first construction.
